The Pastor's Corner

A Step in the Wrong Direction
February 12, 2004
By Rev. Todd Crofford
Sr. Pastor
Laurel Wesleyan Church

In November, from this very column I warned that same sex marriage was imminent in this country if over-zealous judges and the vocal homosexual minority have their way. Since then, we have slid further down this slippery slope culminating in the recent decision in Massachusetts that moves us closer to Sodom than we’ve ever been before.

Here on the home front we face the next harbinger of moral erosion in HB99, a bill that offers nothing to the citizens of this state but homosexual activism run amok. If we allow this bill to pass, then we stand in line with too many other states that have blindly granted credence to laws that will lead to the dismantling and destruction of marriage and the family in our culture.

The real agenda of the homosexual movement, according to gay activist Michael Kinsley, is not to equalize marriage for all, but to abolish the entire institution of marriage altogether. This would be a most devastating development for the children coming behind us. God instituted marriage as holy and honorable for one man and one woman. Any force that weakens this, weakens and eventually decimates the very fabric of our future.

It is neither angry nor unkind toward homosexuals to tell them that we will not bless their relationships with the status of marriage. In a Boston Globe editorial, Jeff Jacoby wrote, “It is not bigotry to point out that some institutions have stood the test of time because they are the only ones that can stand the test of time.”

In reality, as humans, we are not capable of creating or removing blessing upon relationships. God does that as he sees fit, and He has clearly weighed in on this issue. The Bible warns that such behavior is both unrighteous and unacceptable in his eyes.

Recent escapades at the Super Bowl halftime show have possibly jolted our culture into recognizing how rapidly our morals are declining. But if we are not careful, we will be swiftly lulled back into a drunken daze, intoxicated with the high-tech immorality of our modern times.

If we don’t draw a line in the sand here at marriage, we may find ourselves drowning tomorrow. Encourage your senator to take the first right step by opposing HB99. Then go on and encourage the United States Congress to pass legislation for the Federal Marriage Amendment. If we fail at this, God help us all.
